Job Description
BBC XTRA, BBC Arabic is currently looking for a Senior Broadcast Journalist to act as team leader and program presenter on a 12 months fixed term contract based in Cairo, Egypt.
The Senior Broadcast Journalist will take editorial responsibility for the day-to-day program output
The Senior Broadcast Journalist will be involved in presenting BBC Xtra live on radio; this includes performing at the microphone with or without a script, conducting interviews and chair discussions, live or pre-recorded.
The Senior Broadcast Journalist will mainly be responsible for researching, writing, translating, and editing or adapting items, stories or program material
Duties and Responsibilities
use a range of audio, digital and video equipment and information
oversee strategic planning and research and to co-ordinate coverage of major events
liaise with the team in London, freelance reporters overseas as well as BBC bureaus, in addition to BBC Arabic and the wider BBC
approve final versions of packages and recorded material and line them up for broadcast according to their editorial value and time validity.
ensure the BBC is sharing the first hand original stories produced by the team through flagging interesting content and providing all required assistance
be involved in the training and development of staff, including giving effective guidance and feedback
work on improving diversity within the team and reflect diversity in BBC Xtra’s output
Determine the content and running order of the program according to the strategy set by your editor.
Responsible for the commissioning of stories from reporters and producers as well as the making of packages and features which meet high journalistic standards and break new grounds
Job Requirements
Fluency in Arabic as a mother tongue or equivalent, with full command of Arabic grammar.
Excellent English language skills, both written and spoken.
Arabic speakers from all nationalities and backgrounds are encouraged to apply
Up to date and comprehensive knowledge of Middle East and international issues current affairs, political and non-political.
An excellent understanding of the role of social media and digital media in our journalism is necessary.
Previous and recent and significant experience as a Broadcast Journalist, and experience in managing a team.
Skills of bringing new ideas and stories to the BBC Arabic team.
Wide range of contacts across the Arab world is highly desirable.
Flexible with your working hours, willing to travel when necessary sometimes at a short notice.

Considerable relevant experience as a program maker/output editor
Excellent independent and balanced editorial judgment
Experience of originating and developing creative program ideas and of dealing with live, breaking stories
Ability to interpret complex stories for a non-specialist audience
Ability to work to tight deadlines and under pressure
Good organizational skills and the ability to prioritize workload and to work flexibly
A team-player with good interpersonal communication skills
